Planning a career path and acquiring the appropriate skills is key for career development and successful career. The starting point for such career path starts with personal vision and decision making. Clearly, the quality of your decision-making will depend upon the information and knowledge available to you. The more you know about yourself, the more effective your career decisions will be. That involves knowledge of your internal self (disposition, personality, preferences, ability etc.) as well as your external situation (family, financial, industry, support, etc.).

Whether you are forming a career plan, reviewing your career options, or evaluating how to respond to a new position offer, the following eight steps will help you make constructive decisions for your career growth. Finding fulfilling career starts by understanding yourself – your innate abilities, your skills, your interests, your values, your goals, your personal style and characteristics, your family background and history, as well as where you are in your career path.

The following are eight steps for career development.

Step one: Evaluating your abilities

First, it is important to assess your abilities. It is the objective identification and assessment of your innate or “hard-wired” abilities.

Step two: Assessing your skills

Different than abilities that are innate, skills are developed and learned. Skills are those function-driven tasks an individual has learned to do. They develop over time through study, education, application and practice. If one integrates his internal abilities in developing a skill, the skill will be acquired more quickly, easily and fully and will facilitate faster and more successful career development.

Step three: Understanding your personal/social style

Each individual has a unique personal style (pattern of body language, communication, social engagement, conflict resolution, assertiveness, etc). This personal style is key ingredient in social situation and dictates how other people respond either more or less favorably to this personal style. The personal style of the individual is also what makes this individual relate better or worse to other people.

Step four: Exploring your interests

For many reasons, individual develops personal interests and preferences. When these interest and passions are recognized and embraced, the individual can work toward combining these with his abilities to achieve a more comprehensive and more integrated use of both elements in his career development to achieve greater fulfillment in his profession.

Step five: Examining your family history

Personal background, history and family dynamics shape individual’s life as well as work style and work ethic. Examining and understanding family history, dynamics and relationship as well as other influential situations is important element in understanding our behavior. This understanding can also help change unhealthy way of relating while building more healthy behavior.

Step six: Clarifying to your values

Value system, such as good or bad, wise or unwise, moral or immoral defines the way we relate and react to people and situations around us. When we know our value, and what we stand for, and combined it with knowledge of the other important life factors, individual becomes wiser. When wisdom is implemented, it betters individual’s position and it allows bringing individual’s plans and choices into focus. Knowing your values and applying wisdom dramatically enhances career development.

Step seven: Define your goals

Every person has goals which motivate and drive his actions. These goals and objectives are the measure in which individual assess his progress. These goals serve as career millstones and are dynamically changing, yet serve as the directions aspire to be.

Step eight: Career development cycle

Each individual faces critical career stages or transitions in his life. These career requirement and changes issues are sometimes self-created and sometimes caused by external forces. By defining and facing the issues, while understanding personal and group needs, you are empowered to make better career decisions, while enabling you through these career transitions.
