A COUNSELING TERMS THAT MIGHT BE CONFUSING

Couples Therapy or Couples Counseling is a counseling process that looks to improve couples relationship. It helps build couples skills and the adjustment of two people who have developed an interdependent relationship. There are multiple modalities and procedures to help two people improve their adjustments to each other. Methods for couples therapy includes Imago Couples Therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Gottman Method for Couples Counseling. Generally, a more experienced therapist or a counselor will offer more perspectives, ways and tools to a couple to improve their dynamics. Length and frequency of treatment will depend on severity of problems, level of motivation and skills and ability of the psychotherapist. A couple can be dating, living together, married, separated, divorce and may be gay, lesbian or heterosexual.
Marriage Therapy or Marriage Counseling. Marriage implies two people have created a union sanctioned by a government or religious institution. The methods used in marriage counseling, marriage therapy and couples therapy or couples counseling are similar. Each couple is unique and face specific challenges that requires different and customized intervention or treatment.

Psychotherapy is a processes that helps improve psychological and emotional functioning. It addresses personal, relational or business issues or heal past wounds. Examples of psychotherapy processes and treatments includes Psychodynamic Therapy, Cognitive Therapy, Behavior Therapy, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Schema Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Rational-Emotive therapy, or Group Therapy. Many forms of psychotherapy are blends of different approaches.

Coaching refers to guiding and helping a person to deal with present challenges and achieve future goals. Coaches support and guide individuals to move toward personal goals or to push a person to a higher level of performance. Through the coaching process, personal coaches help clients to clarify their goals, and challenge them to stay at their course to success to achieve extraordinary results. Even Though coaches often receive professional training through various programs and institutions, they are not licensed as therapists, counselors, or mental health professionals.

Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) is a distinct licensed profession that requires a Masters degree of post graduate study. In addition to passing a written exam, the license also requires supervised clinical experience of 1500-3000 hours (depends on the state). Marriage and family therapists specialize in systemic perspective and serve to help married couples and families communicate more effectively and work out their differences.

Mental Health Counselor (MCH). Obtaining this license requires a Masters degree which takes approximately two years of post graduate study. The license also requires clinical-supervised work and passing a written exam.

Clinical Psychologist. In addition to their Ph.D. degree in Psychology. psychologist requires an additional two years of supervision and passing a written (and often) an oral exam. There are a few states that allow psychologists to prescribe medications (with additional training) but that is uncommon.

Clinical Social Worker (MCSW). This profession requires a Master degree. Licensure vary by state requirements and requires 2 years of supervised clinical experience. Social workers can also specialize in diverse fields such as human services management, social welfare analysis, community organizing etc..

Psychiatrist is a physician (M.D.)who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental health and emotional problems. After graduation from medical school, psychiatric residency and completion of this training, psychiatrists must pass a licensing exam to obtain certification and legally practice in the field. Psychiatrists, like doctors can prescribe medications.
